New permanent secretary appointed

Dr Christopher Ciantar has been appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs. He took up his appointment on Thursday

Dr Ciantar joined the Ministry for the Environment in 1994 as an engineer in the Building and Engineering Department. In 1996 he read for an M.Sc. in Building Services Engineering from Brunel University (UK).

Dr Ciantar obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy from Bournemouth University (UK), in 2001. He was appointed Head of the Waste Management and Sustainable Initiatives Unit in the same year and Strategy and Development Executive of WasteServ Malta Ltd in 2003.

In 2005 he was appointed Director (Environment Policy & Initiatives) in the Ministry for Rural Affairs & the Environment.

I know Chris Ciantar from my days as a student in 2001 when he was heading the ambitious waste separation domestic programme. His vision and ideas were there and it was not through lack of trying that the scheme is still on the rocks today. Let's hope that as Perm Sec, he will bring much needed energy and motivation to this ministry where he has already served in the role of consultant to the Minister.

Gosh....so one can enter the civil service as an engineer and with less than ten years work experience be promoted to permanent secretary. That's quick...perhaps that is why Recycle Tuesdays is in such a disarray. Stick to engineering young man...you might be better at it than trying to solve our country's environmental problems!!!
