Eleven Maltese secondary schools are preparing for ArtLinks, the annual art exhibition organised by a number of art teachers to showcase students' creative talents while fostering an atmosphere of teamwork on art projects.

Movement is the theme chosen by the organising committee for this year's exhibition.

A great variety of works has been presented by the students, reflecting the different teaching methods used to instruct them and the art activities they have been engaged in.

Students have used installations, paintings and sculpture to bring out the theme after teachers guided them in the study of works by great artists in history, inspiring them to come up with new ideas.

Students were struck by Alexander Calder's mobiles, Jackson Pollock's action painting as well as drawing ideas from the English artist Bridget Riley.

They were also encouraged to study the works of Umberto Boccioni and Giacomo Balla, two leading artists from the Italian group of the beginning of the 20th century - the Futurists. Maltese artists Charles Gatt and Antonio Sciortino were also an inspiration for groups of students working on this project.

ArtLinks 2008 will be held at Lorenzo Gafa' Secondary School in Vittoriosa. It will be open to the public between May 12 and May 29 from 8.30 a.m. till 2 p.m. and 24 hours a day on May 30 and 31, coming to an end at noon on June 1.
