The article on Malta's wartime aerodromes (The Sunday Times, April 6), has prompted me to express my views about the present situation of the Qrendi airfield, the last remaining former wartime airfield on our island. The area of San Niklaw, where the former airfield is situated, is facing a serious threat if plans to build a number of cattle farms are approved. A campaign has already been launched to preserve the former Qrendi airfield and its military buildings, The airfield is a memorial to Maltese and Allied military personnel who contributed to the liberation of Europe during World War II.
There is still time to remove this threat to this historic heritage, which instead can be preserved and could form part of a trio of tourist attractions, since it is close to the Neolithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra. Also nearby is the wartime Ħaġar Qim HAA gun site which can be restored and also become a tourist attraction. Military history is a growing sector of special interest tourism which should be explored.
