Prize Day at St Monica School

At this year's Prize Day performance at St Monica School, Birkirkara, entitled 'Magic Moments from the Musicals', 170 young actresses, singers and dancers ranging from Grade 1 to Form 5, under the direction of expressive arts teacher Rita Vassallo, performed excerpts from the timeless classics such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and from the Webber musicals Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Phantom of the Opera.

The school choir 'Spinelli's Angels', named after the school's foundress Maria Teresa Spinelli, and directed by Sr Vania Bonello and Sr Pauline Micallef, also sang songs that appealed to the different age groups, including Breaking Free from High School Musical and Hey Jude!

Prizes were awarded not only for academic excellence but also to reward outstanding qualities of character and achievement in various fields including music, art, drama, and to recognise commitment to the other values the school seeks to transmit.

School head Antoinette Pace and head girl Sara Portelli also addressed the ceremony, which was presided over by Anthony V. Degiovanni, director at the Education Division.
