Valletta moved seven points clear in the premier league by beating Hamrun Spartans 4-2 this afternoon, after watching second placed Birkirkara lose 2-1 to Sliema.
Gaetan Spiteri opened the score for the Spartans in the 26th minute but Monesterolo evened things out on the half hour.
Valletta took control with a Grioli goal in the 56th minute and made sure with a further two goals in the space of five minutes from Grioli and Temile in the 74th and 79th minute. Effiong got the second one for Hamrun in the dying minutes.
Earlier Birkirkara started well, with a goal in the fourth minute against Sliema by Sylla but they were unable to capitalise and goals by Barbara in the 38th minute and three minutes from time gave Sliema the three points, ending a dismal run for the blues.
