Employers hiring redundant workers from textile companies VF and Bortex are being offered a "redeployment grant" covering half the minimum wage for 17 weeks.

This funding is being made available by the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) and co-financed by the Maltese government. The scheme is being implemented by the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC).

The EU approved Malta's application for EGF funds on April 10 in order to assist workers in the textile industry made redundant in late June 2007. The money targets 675 workers, deemed to have been made redundant as a result of globalisation pressures.

The funds will also be used for occupational guidance, training, aid for self-employment and job-search allowance.

Employers interested in this scheme may contact the scheme coordinator at the ETC on 2220 1275 or at joseph.d.mercieca@gov.mt.
