I would like to express my support for the letter Shamefully Smoke-Filled (April 17). I had already written about this issue a few months ago. At that time I had expressed my dismay that this particular venue is among the smokiest ones in St Julians, and the irony of this is that it is only a few metres away from the police station.

It is an utter disgrace that this law is not being taken seriously at all. Why do non-smokers have to be subjected to second-hand smoke whenever we venture to our favourite place in St Julians and other entertainment hot spots?

Why do we have to go back home stinking of smoke?

This is a big injustice and having been in the UK during the past year I can also testify that when the smoking ban was introduced there everybody took it seriously and from day one all those concerned, including bouncers, were doing their utmost to make sure that there were no offenders. What a contrast with Malta, where it is even a common sight to see bouncers or other staff smoking inside entertainment establishments!
