The article on page 12 (April 15) on erecting outdoor fitness equipment around Malta made for some interesting reading. The idea is good, with some reservations.

One would hope that these areas would be properly maintained. Unfortunately there are some parks and play areas that are in dire need of care.

Choice of apparatus needs to be considered carefully, as well. One would hate to see two rather overweight and unfit fathers get into a competitive mood and overdo it.

The report failed to mention where the pool of qualified personal trainers would come from. From available information they are in short supply as far as the fitness industry is oncerned. Mcast does have a general diploma course. This should be supplemented with some credible certification by an internationally-recognised body. This will instil confidence and motivation in anyone who decides to go on a progressive fitness regimen and decides to utilise the services of a personal trainer.

Hopefully, the participants in a course being given at two fitness facilities in the St Julians area will be the first crop of locally qualified personal fitness trainers. From information I was given they will be examined by a recognised UK institute.

Who knows? Maybe, after the language school, this will be the next niche to put Malta on the map. No problem with grammar or syntax. Bodies are universal after all.
