Labour commemorate Manwel Dimech
The acting leader of the Malta Labour Party, Charles Mangion yesterday paid tribute to the pioneer of socialism Manwel Dimech during a ceremony at the monument dedicated to him in Valletta.
The event was held to mark the 87th anniversary of his death.
Dr Mangion laid flowers at the monument, followed by deputy leader Michael Falzon, party president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, general secretary Jason Micallef, the parliamentary group and representatives of sectional committees and MLP mayors and councillors, Manwel Dimech, a workers' leader, journalist, author and poet, who was born on December 25, 1860 and died in exile in Sudan on April 17, 1921, is considered to be one of the first proponents of socialism in Malta.
He was also the founder and main protagonist of Ix-Xirka ta' l-Imdawwlin (Enlightened's League), a left-wing and anti-Colonial movement.

Manwel Dimech should be hailed as one of our foremost political figures and patriots of our modern history. Unfortunately, because of the latter-day political connotations, he is still sidelined and grossly ignored in schools to the extent that few people, especially the young, actually know who he was, what he did and what he fought for, and how the British colonial powers, with the macchiavellian connivance of the Church, succeeded in keeping him in exile until he eventually died.
