Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said proposals made by the Engineering Board and the Chamber of Engineers will be studied with a view to making the necessary amendments to laws governing the sector.

He said the board and the chamber are proposing a number of changes relating to the representation of the chamber on the engineering board, the widening of the range of engineering fields, a revision of the clause on indemnity insurance and the introduction of an appeals board.

Speaking at the 17th annual conference held by the chamber on the theme Marine Engineering: Beyond Our Shores, Mr Pullicino said a number of other areas needed to be addressed by the profession. Among these are the dissemination of the code of ethics and the establishment of a structure for continuing professional development

Mr Pullicino said an area of national importance where the engineering profession is already making a major contribution, but where a lot more work is required, was meeting Malta's obligations as a member state of the European Union.

He mentioned particular areas of interest such as waste management, the improvement of energy performance of buildings and the need to increase the proportion of Malta's energy needs from renewable sources.
