Malta's U-18 team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ireland in the first of two friendly matches in Cork. The decisive goal came from a 51st-minute penalty, given for a foul on Jake Kelley. Paddy Madden scored from the spot.

In the first half, Malta had gone closest to breaking the deadlock, Miguel Ciantar hitting a 30-metre scorcher which shaved the upright.

The two teams will meet again this evening at St Colman's Park.
