Boy, 3, in fatal fall

A three-year-old boy died after falling a height of about one storey into a shaft at Żebbuġ yesterday at about 1.30 p.m.

The toddler was recovered from the shaft by Civil Protection Department personnel. He was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital where, despite medical intervention, he died some time after arrival.

The police said the shaft is in the basement of a building.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna appointed a team of court experts to help in an inquiry.

Tragic... just tragic... at 3 years of age... Why are shafts and other similar pit holes not covered by iron nets like we do with pregnant windows against burglars? Sometimes dangers inside are as bad, if not worse, then those outside!

Health and safety building regulations must provide architectural guidelines to prevent such an sad accident.

was this shaft not surrounded by a wall or closed.is this accident due to negligence of the owner of the building?the people should know why this accident happened and learn to report certain hazards for the benefit for all those concerned .be it a private or a public place.may i ask the police if the owner is being incriminated ?
