Weddings today are quite different from how they used to be, although some couples are reviving some local wedding traditions. Here's how a wedding was celebrated 200 years ago.
In the 1800s, when a young girl's parents decided it was time she got married they hung a pot of sweet basil on the outside their house and they employed a matchmaker to look for an appropriate husband for her. A dowry had to be agreed and all the contracts signed. Then the couple was taken to church in a procession. The bride wore a veil over her face and was joined by her family and guests. Three men led the procession one carrying small loaves of bread, another, a large bread ring in a basket and a third, a container of burning incense.
When the marriage ceremony was over, the couple went to bride's home, under a canopy. Musicians accompanied them singing their praises and guests threw nuts and sweets. Guests also brought their own food for the wedding feast. Eight days after the ceremony, the bride left her father's house to be received by husband in their new home and guests would be invited to another meal.
