Shoes in stories nearly always possess some magic powers. Remember what happened when Dorothy wore her red shoes? A pair of red shoes also appears in Hans Christian Anderson's story of the same name, where the wearer couldn't stop dancing.

Ballet Shoes tells the story of Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil, who were adopted as babies by Great Uncle Matthew, known as Gum. Pauline is the only survivor from a shipwrecked boat. Petrova is the orphaned child of a Russian couple and Posy is the daughter of a widowed ballet dancer. They are looked after by Gum's great-niece, Sylvia and her old nurse Nana. The story is about how they fulfil their ambitions to go on stage.

Indian Shoes is a collection of humorous and touching short stories for children from seven to nine. They tell of Ray Halfmoon and his grandpa in their daily lives in urban Chicago and rural Oklahoma.

Other fairy stories with shoes playing an important part are Little Goody Two Shoes, Cinderella and Puss In Boots.

And, talking of boots, Seven League Boots, which feature in European folklore allow the wearer to take great strides of seven leagues with each step. The boots are presented by a magical character to someone to enable him to complete a significant task. Seven leagues are equal to about 40 kilometres!
