A record number of yachts will gather on the start line of the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) on Sunday for the first edition of the International Yacht Paint Double Handed Round Malta Race.
The day-long race promises to be a success with nearly 50 sailors set to compete in the event, organised by the RMYC.
More than 25 racing and cruising models are expected to challenge for the new International Yacht Paint Trophy, which will be awarded to the overall winner over the next three years.
Yachts will be split into various IRC classes according to RMYC rules.
There is also a new cruiser division within the IRC Class, providing less competitive boats with the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the event as they sail in the beautiful waters around Malta.
Among the other entrants preparing for this new event are David Franks and David Anastasi, who will be on board the J-125 all-out racer, Strait Dealer.
"Competition will be tough but we've been discussing tactics and are determined to do well in this event," Franks and Anastasi said.
"It's vital to prepare well in advance for a race like this and we're working hard to make sure that we are in the right mindset and completely focused on winning.
"The crew have worked hard to get Strait Dealer up to such a high racing standard and we are really going to push for victory."
Aaron Gatt Floridia, together with his brother Edward, will be racing their Bavaria 36 Blue Fin.
"The racing element is brilliant but I'm also looking forward to the social events which are ideal occasions to meet new and old friends," Aaron Gatt Floridia said.
"The short-handed races are the most exciting events on my sailing calendar this year and I'm delighted to be back in Malta just for this race."
The course will vary depending on the weather conditions on the day.
The fleet will either head up to the South Comino Channel and round Malta or sail south towards Marsaxlokk and head up along Dingli Cliffs.
Registration and the skippers' briefing will be held at the RMYC on Thursday. The prize giving ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 23.
The boats entered for the race so far are: Inspiration, First Time, Geisha, Harry, Mischief, Maltese Falcon, Nauti Buoy, Primadonna II, Spirit of the Winds, Fekruna, Strait Dealer, Time Out, Breezer, Elusive, Sailaway, Diva, Maarial, Artie, XL, For Pete's Sake, Kaos and Blue Fin.
