An exit poll put Silvio Berlusconi on course to win Italy's election on Monday with a 2 percentage-point lead over the centre left's Walter Veltroni in the lower house of parliament and 3 points in the Senate.

If the outcome of the poll for Sky TV is confirmed, with a Senate lead big enough to secure a majority, the 71-year-old centre-right leader will become prime minister for the third time.

A second poll for state TV also put Berlusconi ahead in both chambers.
