Gift of Life calls for common stand against abortion

Gift of Life, the pro-life NGO, has thanked the government and the opposition for having ensured that Malta is represented at the plenary session of the Council of Europe being held this week, during which the Council will vote on a non-binding resolution for the de-criminalisation of abortion in all member states.

"Gift of Life calls upon the Maltese delegation, made up of representatives of both the government and the opposition, to continue to co-operate and agree on a common stand against the proposed resolution. The Maltese delegation is also encouraged to join forces with other member states voting against the said resolution," Gift of Life said.

The MLP in a statement said Leo Brincat, one of the Labour MPs attending the council session, this morning appealed to the socialist group in the Council of Europe to work with other parties so that the motion on the legalisation of abortion could be withdrawn.

He pointed out that this matter fell within the competence of national governments. Furthermore, the council should respect the unanimous position against abortion in countries such as Malta.

Being against abortion is not the sole exclusive reserve of Christians, even though it may suit Grima and co to try and imply this. How sad that instead of holding an intelligent debate, the pro-abortion movement have nothing else to offer but untruths and slur. It says much about the strength of their arguments.

"Prohibition will only create an underground market which will in turn create dangers that do not need to exist."

Legalising abortion will only make potential mothers perform abortions which will in turn create insecurity and lack of respect for life that do not need to exist.

And by the way, why do we need to kill people to show that rape is wrong?
Gerry Cowie (on 14/4/08)
Mr Busuttil, it is not wise to compare muslim countries laws with laws of christian countries. It is rather extreme to make such a suggestion. With respect to muslim nations there is a far greater freedom in our society. Like it or not, most laws are in fact based on christian principles, without which you would most likely not be here!

Would you choose to be aborted if you could to back in time? I wonder!

You are right that, as a man, you would never be in a position to make a decision about an abortion.

The voice of the innocent child - not ignoring the woman who has been raped, is one that somebody needs to stand up for.

Life is already cheap as it is. And given that one can judge a country by the way it treats its animals, one can see how unimportant human life has become. Here in the UK you have more chance of a heavy sentence for hurting a cat than for even hurting an old lady, let alone an unborn child!

And to quote your good self, Mr Busuttil, "Please stop imposing your views on others who do not share them."

By the way, who is "pushing this thing underground"?
Mary Cassar (on 14/4/08)
People who support abortion are truly at a loss for credibility. If it is wrong and hurts women, then why would anyone who cares, want to support a woman to go ahead. Why not help her keep the baby? Simply because helping her would cost a person more than simply saying go on, kill the child. What is fundamentally common amongt pro abortion people, is that they are the first to call for rights to kill and the last to be there when that women needs help. Simply, very convenient. Thank goodness we are pro-life in this country. It would be a very scary world if Malta ended up like the UK or Germany where nobody gives a hoot about anyone else. Malta will never legalise abortion as long as there are people willing to do something and help, like the emmergency pregnancy Help and support service run by the pro-life foundation gift for life. Why not help women like them instead of impose you morbid solution on us?
M Grima (on 14/4/08)
Well done Steve Busuttil for getting to the heart of the matter. We should respect people's right to their own moral choices. I even respect those Jehova's Witnesses who refuse blood transfusions and die as a result. The state has no right to enforce its version of morality on us through dubious legislation with religious over-tones. The state does of course have the obligation to enact legislation that prevents people inflicting pain and suffering on others. However, pain and suffering are NOT inflicted on zygotes or blastocyctes for reasons that 12 year old children who have studied biology can understand. Morning-after pills for rape victims is not akin to "murdering babies". People who say so have had their moral intuitions clouded by religious metaphysics. It is born of the delusion that human beings are the stepping-stone to The Almighty. Kyle Pullicino is kidding nobody by saying that Gift of Life is a secular organisation. These types of movements are only common in Catholic countries (where abortion laws are most strict) e.g. Latin America, Ireland, Poland, Malta. Note also that only Malta and the Vatican prohibit abortion when the life of a woman is in danger due to her pregnancy. One of the main protagonists in this debate is the head of Malta's Bioethics Committee, Michael Asciak. He is a member of Opus Dei . He probably claims that he applies secular reasoning to his deliberations about bioethics, whilst, at the same time, claiming to know the mind of the Creator of The Universe. This whole debate would be comical if it wasn't so sad.

Once again it is very simple!

Not everyone shares your views and no one should impose them on others.

Obviuosly i cannot decide to have an abortion since i'm a man, however i would support any woman who decides to do so since ultimately it is she who will have to go through everything.

abortion is just another issue that will eventually become legal in Malta like in most other countries.

Not doing it is right and is up to every individual, stopping someone from doing it is just not right, there are situations where this decision should be allowed by law.

Does anyone really believe that by lobbying like this someone who has already decided to get an abortion is not going to do it? the only thing that will happen is that some poor teenager will end up in some dirty flat with some criminal and getting it done risking her life as well.

Prohibition will only create an underground market which will in turn create dangers that do not need to exist.

By all means if you believe that abortion is killing then that is your view and i respect it, but do not impose such things on others.

No argument put forward can change the reality of this sad but real problem. Pushing this underground will only make it worse!

Kyle Pullicino (on 14/4/08)

Gift of Life is a secular pro-life organization that puts forward its arguments based on facts coming from science (not based on religious views).

And anyway, I find no problem with an organization that encourages peace, love, kindness and life to have an opinion on our laws (just as you and me have an opinion).

And finally, please come up with a better argument than "stop imposing your views on others who do not share them." because it is getting boring for me having to reply, each time, with:

It's not about imposing our opinions on others (why would we be having these debates then?). No one has a right to prevent a society from developing successfully in ways it thinks are right. Pro-lifers are simply protecting an embryo's right to live which eventually means they are protecting every human beings' right to live (yours too).
Joseph Aquilina (on 14/4/08)
Steve Busuttil, there is no confusion between state and religion here. Does the state give you the right to kill anyone based on his/her age, status or religion? Then how can the state give you the right to kill an unborn child? Additionally rape is NOT one of the most common reasons why abortion is used in the countries where this has been implemented. Most of the time abortion is used to kill an unborn child just because the child happens to come at the wrong time – and that is not fair and unethical!
Mary Cassar (on 14/4/08)
Women want help and not laws to conceal the obligations of those fathers who don't want to take up their responsibility to be a father to their child. Rape victims almost all agree that the abortion after rape was a far worse experience than the rape. They also agree it made it almost impossible for them to get over the rape afterwards because they now had a double trauma. So how can it be a good idea then? Source of this is a book I read, given out at a recent seminar written by David Reardon – “Victims and Victors” and the Chamber of professional Psychologists in the UK a month ago.

Who would in their right mind, would execute a child of say, one day, for the crime of his father who may have raped his mum? What difference is there between that child and a baby one day before in the womb? Those who want to hide the truth that a life stops living in her mother and also want to deny that abortion hurts a women. They seem to select deeply emotional arguments like yours to water-down in a veer of high emotive argument to disguise what is actually being proposed. Abortion is killing babies and destroying women more after a rape. Why not help women rather than condemn them in this way to a worse future so that some chain of clinics can get rich on innocent blood?

And, just how do you propose to prove that she was raped by the way? Couldn’t any women just walk in to a clinic and claim to be raped to get an abortion? It is a well documented fact that rapists and abusers use abortion to hide the proof of their crimes? How is the state supposed to separate these cases in time for an abortion at some proposed week of gestation? What about criminal processes that take time as we all know? Surely the child would be born in most cases by the time the trial is over, what then? I suppose then it would be too late for abortion right? So why not allow euthanasia of the child for up to say 6 months after birth for rape? If you think that this is exaggerated, then look at Brussels today. They have a law exactly like this today because of the sort of illogical arguments put forward by people in their sad countries who simply, do not bother to ask these questions and just wanted to create emotional debates that cloud logic and reason.

steve busuttil (on 14/4/08)
Please stop imposing your views on others who do not share them.

If someone feels that she is not ready to go through with a pregnancy (such as after being raped) then she should have the right to do so without having to travel or do it in some back-street!

It is about time that we separate the State laws from Religious views, the two do not go hand in hand.

Then we have the cheek to look down on Muslim countries who do exactly the same thing!!!!
