Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil has been appointed spokesman of the European People's Party on Frontex, the EU agency
which deals with the Union's external borders.

He will be responsible for coordinating the position of the largest political group, the EPP-ED, on the future of the agency when the European Parliament adopts a response to the European Commission's plans on Frontex published in earlier this year.

"I am delighted to be given this responsibility," Dr Busuttil said, having followed the issue of illegal immigration and the first steps taken by the agency since it started operating in October 2005.

"The EPP is keen to help shape the future of this agency and to ensure that it fulfils its tasks in helping EU member states face the challenge of illegal immigration." he said.

In February this year, the European Commission published a set of proposals on illegal immigration, including proposals to review the remit of Frontex and widen its mandate, a proposal to establish a European surveillance network (Eurosur) and a
proposal to regulate the entry and exit of non-EU nationals into the EU territory.

Dr Busuttil will be responsible for the EPP's position on Frontex and on Eurosur.
