Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA) will be holding an open day at the Malta at War Museum in Vittoriosa today to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the awarding of the George Cross by H.M. King George VI to Malta and her people in 1942. The event will run between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The open-day will include frequent guided tours of air raid shelters, interactive displays and re-enactments. A replica George Cross and historic information will also be on public display. The re-enactments will focus on themes connected with the daily life of the Maltese during the Blitz such as air raid warning signals, anti-gas protection and shelter construction. A replica of the wartime flag of Malta will also be flown on the day.

The film documentary Malta GC, will be shown throughout the day. The film was produced by the Crown Film Unit (CFU) in 1942 on the specific wish of King George VI who wanted to document on film the great fortitude and bravery shown by the inhabitants and defenders of Malta in the face of overwhelming adversity. This film was completed in 1943 when it was shown around the world giving Malta its new name as Malta GC.

The entrance fee is €5 per adult, children under the age of 16 go in free. A special offer will also be made for those who wish to obtain a copy of Malta GC.
