Works on Tigné Point tunnel completed

Works on the Tigné tunnel have been completed, pending Government certification.

The tunnel was built by the Midi plc consortium - one of the obligations in its contract with the Government. Works on the tunnel were considerably delayed because of major engineering work required to preserve the overlying Garden Battery, a 19th century fortification system that was not originally scheduled to be conserved according to the Outline Development Permit.

The tunnel was designed to cater for two-way traffic in an urban, built-up area and was built to the size and specifications stipulated by the Outline Development Permit and the scheme approved by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and by the Roads Department.

Looks like the Marsamxett end of the tunnel, which I had look at 3 weeks ago.

I wonder if the height clearance allows for the open-top double deckers, as these seem to have become a (long-overdue) big success.

I don't see any rainwater draining systems. Maybe this tunnel is planned to be used by gondolas instead of cars in case of a heavy rainfall.

I'm curious to know which end of the tunnel this is as I can see a completely different picture from where I live, i.e. the Qui-Si-Sana end which as far as I know forms entrance/exit to this tunnel which is still in a complete shambles. It has also been mentioned that the width was reduced and the traffic will only go one way. Very interested to find out the truth.
