While I agree that speed limits should be enforced on our roads, I do not agree with the speed limit set on the Ħal Far road, where a speed camera has been installed. I think 60 km/h is far too low for this type of road, which is in an uninhabited area. Setting the speed limit at 70 km/h is more reasonable, considering that this road is fairly long and straight and I am sure it would not compromise on anyone's safety.

I use this stretch of road daily, to and from work and I have observed that this camera is actually creating a hazard rather than preventing a fatal accident. It is not the first time drivers slow down abruptly to 30/40 km/h so they would not be caught by the camera, with the result that the person behind them overtakes (but stays within the speed limit) thus crossing on to the other side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

This in itself is a traffic offence on this particular road and one that the speed camera does not pick up. So I suggest that the speed limit is raised to a more reasonable 70 km/h which after all is the same speed limit set on the Żebbuġ and Mrieħel bypasses.

On the other hand, one cannot wonder if this camera is really there to prevent speeding or accidents or is another method of collecting taxes? I am sure many others who, like me, work at Ħal Far, agree with me on this.
