Marlene Mizzi to lead IoD workshop

The Institute of Directors' Malta Branch (IoD) has announced that its next workshop will be led by former Sea Malta chairman Marlene Mizzi.

Ms Mizzi will tackle the subject of board effectiveness in her workshop entitled 'The Essentials of the Effective Board in Malta' on Saturday at Hilton Malta at 9 a.m. The workshop is part of the 'Four Seasons Series in Director Development' hosted by IoD and supported by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).

Ms Mizzi's workshop will address issues like: What is the definition of an effective board?; board structures, board composition, legislation, regulation and corporate governance?; what is the criteria for the measurement of a board's effectiveness?; what are the variables that may have bearing on the board's effectiveness?

Ms Mizzi's workshop is one of 11 workshops in the series. The series aims to guide established, newly appointed or potential company directors in how to create and deliver shareholder value through corporate governance.

The series has hosted almost 200 delegates across six sessions to date, and has provided the opportunity to increase knowledge of directors' accountability and responsibilities, and enhance their professional competence in this field.

Ms Mizzi was appointed chairman of the board of Sea Malta Company Ltd, the Maltese national shipping line, in 1997. She is a former member of the board of directors of Bank of Valletta and a member of the bankís audit committee and remuneration committee and has served as a member of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy of the University Of Malta until 1997.

Ms Mizzi is currently reading for a Ph.D and has a Master's degree from Maastricht. She is managing director of AMCA Ltd, which owns four retail outlets and a major British franchise and is chairman of Millennium Insurance Agency.

Her doctoral thesis and field of research will focus on corporate governance and effective boards in Malta.
