Toni Abela to run for MLP deputy leader post

Toni Abela, a former party president, yesterday officially announced he will be a candidate for the post of deputy leader (party affairs) of the Malta Labour Party.

"I will endeavour to carry out this important task with the same enthusiasm and energy that I have shown up to now and every time a task was entrusted to me," the well-known lawyer and broadcaster said. Dr Abela has been active in the MLP for most of his adult life but was forced out of the party for some years after proceedings were started against him and Wenzu Mintoff before the party's disciplinary board in 1989. The two then set up Alternattiva Demokratika before they both rejoined the MLP.

Dr Abela is the first person to officially declare his candidacy for a deputy leadership position in the MLP.
