Hospital whistleblower wants job back

A former hospital worker yesterday filed a judicial protest in the First Hall of the Civil Court calling on the authorities to remedy her situation after she was boarded out.

Laura Peregin filed her protest against the Prime Minister, the minister responsible for health, the Director General of Health and the Superintendent of Mater Dei Hospital.

Ms Peregin told the court she used to work at St Luke's Hospital and had reported various abuses within the hospital, including abuse of wastage, to the authorities. Instead of taking action, the authorities put Ms Peregin in a situation whereby it was impossible for her to carry out her work. She had been forced to submit to an examination by a medical board which concluded that she was no longer capable of working in the public sector. Although Ms Peregin said she has been fighting her case since 2004 in an attempt to get her job back and to obtain financial compensation in view of the decision of the medical board, she was still without a remedy.

Ms Peregin called on the authorities to immediately rectify the damages she had suffered as a result of their inaction.

Lawyer Anġlu Farrugia signed the protest.
