Last-gasp goal sends Bayern into semis

Fiorentina, Zenit and Rangers also through

Favourites Bayern Munich scraped through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup after a dramatic extra-time away goals win over Getafe last night.

Bayern will meet Zenit St Petersburg in the last four after the Russian champions went through 4-2 on aggregate despite losing 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in yesterday's second leg.

Italian side Fiorentina and Rangers, the Scottish Premier League leaders, will contest the other semi-final after both obtained 2-0 wins at PSV and Sporting Lisbon respectively.

Getafe played all but six minutes of the game with 10 men but looked to be heading for a famous victory, only for Bayern to twice come back from the dead - first to force the game into extra-time and then to snatch a last-gasp equaliser to level the match 3-3.

Michael Laudrup's side, who had defender Ruben de la Red sent off after just six minutes, stunned Bayern by taking the lead just before the break after midfielder Cosmin Contra smashed home after a fine solo run.

But just as the home fans were celebrating a memorable upset Bayern midfielder Franck Ribery equalised in the 88th minute.

Getafe went for broke at the start of extra-time, Francisco Casquero putting them 2-1 up and substitute Braulio adding a third a minute later. But striker Luca Toni pulled a goal back for Bayern five minutes from time and struck again at the death to end Getafe's dreams.

Romania striker Adrian Mutu struck twice for Fiorentina in a 2-0 away win at PSV Eindhoven. Fiorentina progressed 3-1 on aggregate with Mutu, who scored in the first leg, putting the Serie A side ahead by firing in a free-kick from 25 metres seven minutes before half-time.

Mutu settled the match early in the second half when he netted a rebound after goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes failed to control a shot from Giampaolo Pazzini.

PSV squandered chances to get back into the tie. Fiorentina keeper Sebastien Frey saved a Timmy Simons penalty nine minutes from time.

Zenit St Petersburg lost 1-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen but eased into the semi-finals for the first time thanks to their 4-1 lead from the first leg.

Russian striker Dmitri Bulykin put Leverkusen ahead in the 18th minute, heading a cross from full-back Gonzalo Castro.

But Zenit were the better side in the second half. Spanish referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez awarded Zenit a penalty on 85 minutes when striker Pavel Pogrebnyak was brought down. Anatoliy Tymoschuk missed the target.

Rangers produced a classic counter-attacking performance in their 2-0 win over Sporting.

French striker Jean-Claude Darcheville tucked away a Steven Davis cross on the hour and substitute Steven Whittaker sealed their win in stoppage time.
