Escapee still in critical condition

The man who jumped from a height while trying to escape police custody on Wednesday was still in critical condition yesterday.

Police sources said the man, a 38-year-old from Fgura, was under arrest and was being questioned at the police headquarters in Floriana about a case being investigated by the police.

It is understood that as he was crossing what is known as the CID yard to a separate section, accompanied by a police officer, the man took off, clambered up a wall and, without hesitation, jumped two or three storeys down to the grounds of a school behind the headquarters.

Besides fractured ribs, the sources said the man sustained various other injuries including to his legs and back.

In view of the police investigation, details on what he was being questioned about were not divulged.

The man is in hospital under police surveillance.
