ChooseMalta.com appointment

Caroline Borg has been appointed to the post of director for business development for ChooseMalta.com.

She will take responsibility for driving forward the company's strategy of launching the numerous Choose*******.com domain names, including the recently launched www.ChooseItaly.com.

The key to the success of these these travel sites will be the signing up of agreements with various hotel chains and travel suppliers.

Ms Borg has worked in advertising, fashion and the hospitality industry, and was recently corporate sales manager with the Hilton Malta.

"We are now a team of 12 and have a long list of over 60 destination travel sites to launch!" Inspire Ltd managing director Jonathan Shaw said.

www.ChooseMalta.com was launched in 2005 and last year (2007) generated 1.4 million unique visits and 130 million hits.

MACM wins award for excellence

The teaching centre of the Malta Association of Credit Management was awarded a certificate of excellence by the Institute of Credit Management of the UK for achieving outstanding results in its introduction course in credit management for 2006/07. The overall MACM students' success rate for the period was 88 per cent.

The association offers part-time, evening courses. The next intake of students will be in August 2008. For further information, contact the training centre on tel. 2142 3638/9.

Westin director

The Westin Dragonara Resort has appointed Jason Degiorgio as food and beverage director overseeing all the food and beverage departments in the resort.

Mr Degiorgio has 18 years of experience in the food and beverage industry, working with various five-star hotels on the island.

He spent the last year as operations manager in another leading hotel in Malta, during which he was responsible for the day-to-day running of the hotel operations.

Prize for insurance practitioner

James Portelli has received a discretionary prize and a "highly commended" recognition from the Chartered Insurance Institute's Morgan Owen adjudication panel for his dissertation.

The Morgan Owen Award is awarded for the best essay/dissertation entered by a fellow or associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK). It was first established in 1911/12.

The competition runs annually. However, because of the rigorous criteria, recognition is only awarded if the adjudication panel feels that the submission is of a sufficiently high standard. As a result, the Morgan Owen Medal has only been awarded three times during the last decade, the previous latest award being in 2005.

Mr Portelli's paper presents a case for the creation of a hybrid product that would replace shareholding capital with an investment product structured into different funds. On the back of this investment product, underwriting capital (i.e. capacity) would be guaranteed for insurance purposes. The same investment product would, in turn, be structured into collective investment schemes that can be listed and freely traded. Therefore, the product, throughout its life cycle, transforms from an investment product into insurance capacity into a listed security - on the back of which further investment gains can be realised.

Currently heading the business development unit of an insurance company in the Middle East, Mr Portelli was previously chief executive officer of the Malta International Training Centre (MITC). He started his insurance career with Middlesea Insurance plc in 1990.
