On March 26 an awesome event took place here in Malta. Malta's football team, minnows in FIFA rankings, trashed Liechtenstein by a phenomenal 7-1. The latter country is higher up in FIFA rankings than our national team. The superb Michael Mifsud, "the mosquito", scored five goals.

Both the scoreline and Mr Mifsud's superb effort created new national records.

Amazingly, Malta's record victory was not followed by the usual noisy Maltese-style car cavalcades and celebrations which regularly occur in these islands, once foreign teams like Italy, England, Germany, Brazil, etc., etc., win in the FIFA World Cup!

Obviously, such Maltese football fanatics for foreign countries' teams have not read George Bernard Shaw's quote: "Patriotism is the conviction that your country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it".

Sadly, there was just a handful of fans present at the National Stadium when this momentous event took place.

Come on fellow Maltese football fans, let us get rid of this inferiority complex towards the foreigner and give all our support to the national team in the future. We owe it to our birthplace.

A big prosit to all members of our team, Mr Mifsud in particular, and coach Dusan Fitzel!

Finally, long may the Maltese Mosquito's sting last.

It should constantly remind us to walk with heads held high above our shoulders, proud to be Maltese.
