Talking point

Spin and an Abela-Muscat winnable tandem

The way the Nationalist media are spinning the MLP leadership story is remarkable but totally credible, in the sense that it is happening as expected. It happened in 1992. It has happened since 1998 when the PN concluded that it had its best asset in Alfred Sant being leader of the Malta Labour Party. Now it is happening in regard to George Abela. He is the last man the PN machine would like to see as leader of the MLP.

They have made an easy assessment - Dr Abela may have against him a considerable number of delegates and paid-up members who do not appreciate what he did in 1998. What he did was to express disagreement that Prime Minister Sant should call an election just then.

The reason why was given, rather belatedly, by Dr Sant himself. One main reason he attributed to Labour's defeat on March 8 was the power of incumbency. Is it not blindingly obvious that the sitting government has an advantage over those who oppose it? Its leader decides the election date. Its cohorts can try to massage as many people as can be up to Election Day.

Labour did it in the past, though no massage was enough to restore health in 1987. The Nationalists did it again this time around. It would be naïve to expect otherwise.

Dr Abela was not naïve in warning the MLP general conference in 1998. He has been proved right, not once, but three times. Now he is seen by many, including a critical wide swathe of floating voters, as the man best suited to lead the MLP in the circumstances, when rebuilding on the basis of penetration is necessary. The Nationalists know that and so spin to their hearts' content the opportunity given to them by the Labour media, which ignores that Dr Abela is a citizen of this sad country, that he exists, that he is there, willing and able, despite the hurdles placed in his path.

The Nationalists smirk and put up another major hurdle by seeming to stand up for Dr Abela. Politics is not a game for cissies. It was not invented for the naïve. Cynicism courses through its veins, both among supposed friends as well as declared opponents.

Nothing remarkable in that: it is very believable. For, it is.

So, is there no room for sense, at least for enlightened self-interest? There could be. If enough people within the MLP make my humble reading and see an easy way to plan for the next 15 to 20 years, it will be. The best ticket the MLP could have is Dr Abela as leader and Joseph Muscat as deputy leader. The tandem, sporting a sensible social-democratic platform, would have a strong chance of winning the next election, with the way then clearly mapped out for Dr Muscat to take over with some eight to 10 years added to his portfolio, which already packs a good punch.

Take no bets that the Nationalists have not reached my conclusion as well. Others may be slower on the uptake but many within the MLP might yet see it too, though many others might realise it when it's too late.

I do agree with Mr. Spiteri about an Abela - Muscat tandem. I do not agree with him in the order he placed them. I'll go for Muscat as leader and Abela as deputy leader (Party affairs). My first reason for this choice is simply based on age. Let us not look to the near future but to a term a normal prime minister normally those (ie 10 to 15 years). Second reason being strategy - in my opinion Abela can restructure the party from within and I believe that the leader should not waste resources on that matter. Third reason being - we must not sacrifice the party just for floating voters (although we must cater for them too) but also must take into consideration other elements within the party. With Abela up front it could be a bit detrimental. With Abela backing Joseph it would be a different matter.

As lino Spiteri puts it....that "Abela-Muscat winnable team" so please labour delegates be wise when you will be choosing the leader, as floaters we want a leader that is not so fanatic.. after all floaters decide who wins an election. So I hope that you take L Spieri advice because I'm sure that he wants best for Malta....and for Labour..CHOOSE George Abela and Joseph Muscat..as his deputy

words wisely said. I humbly believe that given the circumstances , MLP needs a transit veteran leader, to steer and refine the party echelons. about time that members and delgate start thinking outside the box and gear up .not only for the forthcoming election but as a party with global objectives and awareness.
having a female as part of the leading team would be an added asset

So Mr. Portelli, guess the PN media have and will not dig into Dr. Abela's or Dr. Muscat's past....obviously for the PN to inspire us further!

Dunstan Crockford says - Labour also need to have the courage to get rid of the Torch..synonymous with the very bad years!!!! and also the communist RED!!!! Tell that to the Conservative Party in UK, cause that's exactly what they had when Maggie Thatcher was in power! Was she a great admirer of Stalin, my dear Dunstan? By the way, is that why the Nationalist Party in Malta stopped singing Mussolini’s (Camicie Nere)?
Pierre Portelli (on 7/4/08)
Blaming the PN in case George Abela doesn't make it will not help the MLP or the country. Lino is very suspicious of what the Nationalists want in this matter. I think that what we all need is a Labour leader who can aspire to lead the nation as well. Lino could have been that man in 1992 but he lost, the MLP lost and the country lost too. This is the message PN supporters want to send to the MLP delegates: It’s Labour’s prerogative who to select but let it be a true statesman this time round! This is not about winning elections but it's about having the piece of mind to go forward as a country. With a mature and strong Labour leader both parties will compete on who delivers most to the country. Than let the best win at the polls in 5 year's time. As to Lino’s suggestion to have an Abela-Muscat tandem; I believe he’s proposed a workable option, but in case JM gets elected, can it also work the other way round: Muscat-Abela?

Whatever the Nats do or say you always find fault with them. The Nats have given valid contribution for the Lab. leadership contest but still you query their intentions. Pls tell us what the Nats should do to go yr way. Perhaps they should imitate labour during the Gonzi bid for leadership. pls tell us.

After 4 years as leader as of the opposition Alfred Sant won his first contested election in 1996. What follows is history - helped by lino spiteri, mintoff and george abela.
The irony is that now George Abela is his own worst enemy. He walked out on the party. What is more dangerous is that he still believes that the Labour Party should interfere in General Workers Union matters and vice versa - remember that he expected Alfred Sant to intervene in the Josephine Sultana saga. This apart from playing the consultant to Eddie Fenech Adami.
Nobody yet knows what leadership credentials George Abela carries. All I remember is that the Ta' Qali Stadiom was built when George was president of the MFA.... .
I prefer GonziPN than GeorgeGonziPN.

As always very interesting to read and digest!!! The leader is not the only thing that needs to be changed though!! The Nationalists did away with their `MADUMA` and projected `EDDIE` instead....and this won over many a Strickland vote!!! Labour also need to have the courage to get rid of the Torch..synonymous with the very bad years!!!! and also the communist RED!!!! To many of us and our children, now grown ups too....these are not at all appealing!!!

Dear Mr Spiteri
Very perplexed by paragraph 6. I genuinely WANT Dr Abela to be Malta's next PM. If I am unwittingly creating a hurdle please enlighten me. I agree with the rest of what you say wholeheartedly as you will read tomorrow
