EU approves aid for dismissed workers

The EU Council of Ministers has approved a grant of €681,207 to Malta to help workers who were dismissed by VF (Malta) Ltd. and Bortex Clothing.

Final approval of the grant was given at a meeting of a transport and communications ministers’ attended by Austin Gatt.

Malta had requested the aid after 675 workers lost their job since Malta and the EU are no longer competitive in the textiles sector.

The funds will be used for re-training and other assistance to enable the workers to start new careers.
