I would like to clarify some points raised by Anthony Micallef Debono (The Sunday Times, March 30).
Union membership is confidential. For this reason, and in accordance with the Data Protection Act, the MUT never discloses its membership list to third parties. The members' database is kept only for internal administrative purposes and members may rest assured that the union will never divulge any information based on its records to anyone, be it presidential or council candidates, NGOs, or even bona fide researchers. This is made amply clear from the outset on the MUT's enrolment form.
The MUT council elections are conducted by an election commission whose members are elected in the union's general conference. The election commission receives nominations from candidates and conducts the whole process in a professional way befitting a serious and democratic union.
