The 2008 National Student Travel Foundation (NSTF) Science Week takes place at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta, between tomorrow and Sunday. It will feature exhibits of original scientific research and technological projects by young people aged between 11 and 21. It is open to the public free of charge during the centre's opening hours, with most activities taking place in the mornings.

Drs Mike and Wendy Gluyas, who for the past 16 years have been touring countries to promote a public understanding of physics will put up their show 'Musical Squares - Adventures in Sound', which will explore the many aspects of sound and hearing in the human and animal kingdoms.

The week also features artworks dealing with energy, health, the ocean and the galaxies, by children between the ages of eight and 10, and interactive workshops ranging from the building of water rockets to pinhole cameras, put up by students from the MCAST Institute for Art and Design.

Dr Lloyd Anderson, the London-based British Council's director of science, engineering and environment, will speak on the topic 'Climate Change - Where and When?' at a symposium being held to officially launch the Science Week and to conclude the NSTF Malta Student Science Forum which is the climax of the NSTF science programme.

Speakers from Malta Enterprise, the Institute of Energy Technology, the International Ocean Institute, Medecology, the Astronomical Society, the Majjistral park and the Health Promotion Department will address interactive lectures during the day, which will end with the awarding of prizes related to the NSTF's various science programmes.

A tailor-made programme is being offered to schools attending the Science Week and younger visitors will take part in the NSTF-MCST 'Little Scientists Village' being held in collaboration with the Department for Curriculum Management and E-learning's Science Centre.

The event is supported by Air Malta, the Malta Council for Science and Technology, the British Council, the Malta Chamber of Scientists, the Science Centre within the Department for Curriculum Management and E-learning, MCAST Institute for Art Design, Agenda Bookshop, Water Services Corporation, St James Cavalier and NSTS Student and Youth Travel.
