The European Commissioner for Maritime Affaires and Fisheries, Joe Borg will today start a short visit to Mauritania to discuss a revised protocol between the EU and Mauritania under the Fisheries Partnership Agreement.

The protocol, signed last month in Brussels, combines substantially reduced fishing possibilities for EU vessels in certain categories together with a significant increase in the amount earmarked for the development of the national fisheries sector and to promote sustainable fisheries in Mauritanian waters. The EU financial contribution will now amount to €305 million over the four-year period covered by the protocol.

A spokesman for Dr Borg said yesterday that, during his visit, the commissioner is scheduled to see the positive impact of this major agreement on the Mauritanian economy first hand and reaffirm the EU's commitment to a long-term partnership which will support not only the Mauritanian fisheries sector but the development of the national economy as a whole.

The commissioner's appointments include meetings with Mauritania's President, Prime Minister and Fisheries Minister.
