Birguma bypass traffic arrangements (1)
It is fine for Mario Azzopardi (Who Is Accountable, March 28) to wish that the entrance to the service road off the new roundabout on the Birguma bypass be reopened. He lives far away from this part of the road and away from potential hazards.
The part of the service road that Mr Azzopardi lives in is fairly wide, with a wide pavement, space for cars to park, leaving enough room for cars to pass safely. On the other hand, the end of Margaret A. Murray Street (the bypass) where the opening of the roundabout is located, is only barely wide enough for one car to pass, let alone making it two-way as Mr Azzopardi wishes.
The danger created should the said bollards be removed is great; cars would zoom in off the roundabout and be confronted by residents trying to enter their garages as well as pedestrians walking off the new zebra crossing soon to be installed for the convenience of people crossing the Birguma bypass. There would be no space for these cars to take evasive action.
Mr Azzopardi need not complain about access to his part of the road; his part of Margaret A. Murray Street is served by two access roads off from St Paul Street and he can easily get on to the bypass as he has easy access to the second Birguma roundabout.
Please Mr Azzopardi look after your end of the street and let us residents at the top end of the street by the Għargħur roundabout live in safety and harmony.
