Champagne on ice
As soon as gonzipn announced the election date I ran to the nearest supermarket and bought several bottles of bitter lemon. I did not want to take any unnecessary risks.
I know that several friends with whom I often share my news in these columns did something very similar. But instead of buying bitter lemon they bought champagne.
Now as things turned out the PN has managed to turn the tables in its favour. Consequently, I do not need my bitter lemon and my friends do not need their champagne! But now I need their drinks and they need mine!
What about a sort of part exchange? Anyone interested can contact me on www.giodembitlem.com.mt. Mosta residents can contact me personally at the greengrocer. First come first served.

The publication of this letter is an insult to the intelligence and maturity of the readers of this paper. It does not contribute in any meaningful or positive way to the democratic debate of this country. I suggest that Mr Demartino changes his tone and refrain from poking insults at his political adversaries.

Mr Demartino - It looks like not everybody understands or appreciates your sense of humour!
To all those who have come out to criticise him, I can only say that he was one of the best, most patient and dedicated teachers I have ever come across - And this at the worst time too, at the height of the schools crisis in 1983/1984. You simply cannot judge a person solely over a letter like that!

Mark Aloisio, I actually think that The Times does us readers a great service by publishing these letters - they provide an accurate reflection of the immaturity, puerility and banality of their authors. My only (minor) complaint is that they are not given more prominence. Maybe it would scare the rest of us from acting as idiotically.
Charles Camilleri please stop trying to justify partisan and stupid behaviour by dragging up other examples of it from the other side of the political divide. Two wrongs have never made a right and never will

When will The Times stop publishing these kind of letters that are nothing but nonsense?

yes Demartino is right. At least he is offering bitter lemon and not vindictive transfers in government Depts as many labourites have already informed their nats colleagus. Have they forgot these utterings? " we will be a Govt for labourites only" " they are of a different dna" " we will work with labourites for labourites" " those are not of our family" and many more. Now that things did not turn out their way many labourites are now expressing their scruples.

Some time ago I remember Mr. DeMartino "crying" in an English-language daily that he was left alone playing the trumpet in defending the PN. ... seems that now he is happy that he was joined by some other band members !
As for buying bitter lemon and not champagne .... but now wants to exchange them, well .... I`m not surprised he didn`t buy any food :
his "friends" and namesakes seem to have more than just a finger in the pie (or many pies) in Malta ..... no wonder he bought bitter lemon, no wonder he wants champagne now. When you and "yours" have been used to eating most of the "public pie" then you understand what a loss would have meant !! If the past is anything to gauge the future on, probably in 5 years time "they" would need a "digestivo" to put their stomach at ease after all the large chunks of pie they would have eaten !!!

May the Lord have mercy on us and save us from people like Mr. Giovanni Demartino. I am glad the Hon. Lawrence Gonzi is Prime Minister and not Mr. Demartino. I hope the Labour Party will resist any temptation to elect a new leader with Mr. Demartino's kind of menatilty.

OK Giovanni, now you have a list of (hopefully) genuine names. They may offer you their champagne at a cut price. Knowing that the price of bitter lemon is substantially lower, I would imagine that your generous self could possibly offer them the bitters for free.

your intelligent and thought-provoking letters never fail to amaze me Mr.Demartino...sometimes I am ashamed that even the PN has supporters like you.

In addition to what Mr. F. Farrugia said below i would like to ask Mr. DeMartino whether the he did actually buy the bitter lemon this year or was it the remaining stock of the bitter lemon Joe Demartino drank in 2007 when he lost his most desired position in the Mosta Local Council?

I have voted for PN but I must agree that the above letter is a sorry excuse for a joke! Bad taste indeed.

I love the way you started your letter Mr.Franco Farrugia, by stating quote What a disgusting man! But then do you read most letters in this paper, and please do ask yourself if others are dividing the country, with their comments......
What petty thoughts from a silly man!

I don't know how old Mr DeMartino is, but this letter shows him up as being infantile, petty and rather silly. Instead of showering in champagne he might consider buying a couple of subscriptions to foreign newspapers and truckloads of books to broaden his horizons and realise that there is more to life than gloating about a wafer-thin party victory.

What a disgusting man!
Now, we shall divide the country into bitter lemon and champagne when the real truth lies elsewhere.
When shall we mature? When shall we realise that we are nothing but a very, very miniscule nation and that rivalry will get us nowhere?
What petty thoughts from a silly man!
