More than 60 per cent of companies taking part in a survey on salaries and benefits in the local IT industry said they find difficulties when recruiting IT talent. Another 39 per cent said it was extremely difficult to recruit new staff.

Furthermore, 56 per cent of the companies interviewed think that the situation will worsen over the next year. Only 11 per cent think it will improve.

This worrying picture emerges from Misco's third edition of the Salaries and Benefits Report for the IT Sector. This report is compiled with the aim of providing senior management with information about the different remuneration packages paid within the Maltese IT industry.

Compiled over a two-month period, spanning from January to February this year, this report focuses on the salaries and benefits offered in ICT and non-ICT companies. This segmentation of information gives the end user a better idea of remuneration packages offered locally, thus permitting a more accurate positioning of the organisation within the market, Misco said.

The survey also reveals that special conditions of employment are not so common within the companies surveyed. Indeed 61 per cent do not offer such conditions while 28 per cent offer flexible hours.

In 47 per cent of all participating companies all employees beyond management grade are eligible for overtime. In 26 per cent of the companies none of the personnel benefit from overtime eligibility.

Performance is the most popular method (33 per cent) used by companies surveyed to determine increases or revisions in remuneration packages.

The majority (72 per cent) use a performance management system.

Annual training expenditure between companies varies. In 39 per cent of companies this expenditure exceeds €699. Twenty-eight per cent of companies spend between €233 and €699 on individual training. There is not a single company that does not spend on employee training.
