I am amazed at the lack of respect to readers shown by Anthony Licari. In his opinion column New Deadly Sins (March 29) he referred to the British weekly The Tablet as "the English language Vatican newspaper".
This is how the editor of The Tablet Catherine Pepinster sums up the paper: "The Tablet is not controlled by the Church hierarchy, which allows it a privileged, but responsible Catholic thinking, a place where orthodoxy is at home but ideas are welcome." Among the ideas given a good airing in recent years in The Tablet were pleas for optional celibacy for priests, more women to be given high positions in the Church, decentralisation of the Roman Curia and the adoption of true collegiality in the administration of the Church. Hardly a Vatican newspaper.
People like Dr Licari are contributing to Labour's lack of credibility among the electorate as they are perceived to be a voice of Labour's frontline apologists.
