It was with great interest I read the account of the Sliema air raid of April 1. 1942. I was living in Church Street, opposite the Sacro Cuor at the time and was one of the lucky ones who lived through the raid, having been put in the shelter, as I recollect, by my father.

My father, an ARP Warden, my mother and youngest sister aged four were not so lucky - they died in that raid. I also have three sisters who survived, and are still alive today. We never forget that day.

It really irritates me, therefore, when I hear people who were born after the war demanding that the George Cross be removed from the Maltese flag. Apart from the medal making the flag instantly recognisable world wide, it helps us to remember the sacrifice made by ordinary people who were not in any way involved in global politics but who were nevertheless victims of war.
