Council lawyer sues former mayor for libel

Mosta local council lawyer Joseph Mifsud yesterday filed a libel suit against the former mayor over comments made in an article published in Il-Mument on Sunday.

Dr Mifsud, who is also the Labour Party's International Secretary, filed the suit against Joe Demartino claiming the contents of the article X'qed Jiġri fil-Mosta (What's going on in Mosta) were libellous.

In the article, the lawyer said, Mr Demartino claimed that Dr Mifsud had been appointed lawyer of the local council in an abusive manner and that a public call for applications had not been issued.

Dr Mifsud argued that this was false as he had been appointed lawyer after he applied following a public call published in the Government Gazette.

Lawyer Philip Galea Farrugia signed the writ.
