Gift of Life rejects AD leader's comments
Gift of Life, the pro-life group, said today it rejected comments made in The Times by Harry Vassallo which, it said, were in favour of making Malta's laws less restrictive and thus allowing for legalized abortion in certain situations.
"We are very disappointed at Dr. Vassallo's comments in his contribution in The Times dated 28th March 2008. We are convinced that Dr.Vassallo is fully aware that this is not an issue, as here in Malta the double effect principle is used successfully in difficult pregnancies.
"His comments set a very dangerous precedent.It is a firmly established fact that the full legalisation of abortion is invariably preceded by the relaxation of laws in certain extreme cases," Gift of Life said.
"Equally we condemn without reservation the timing of the comments made by the leader of Alternattiva Demokratika, given the recent pressure being placed on Malta from the Council of Europe to legalise abortion on demand. Although this resolution would not be legally binding on Malta, we feel that the Maltese Government should do its utmost to ensure that Malta's position is made clear at the plenary," Gift of Life said.

i cannot understand this island mentality. we are now part of eu and we have no other choice but to do what eu dictates. we joined pip because we were obliged to do it, we shall be exposing our soldiers to return to our island in coffins and we are being exposed for any attack from countries that shall see malta as a treat against them.
it is not gonzipn but eu to decide our destiny.

My, my - how loud all these people are. Mention religion or morals or God to them and they get hysterical. I can't imagine why ..... but I'm sure one of these very wise people will tell me.

I find absolutely no problem with having a constitution that assigns the duty of teaching morals to the citizens of the country to an independent organisation especially when that organisation encourages liberty, life, peace, love, charity and generosity.
Believe me, if everyone in the world had a little bit more of those values we'd be living in a much better world.
Please remember that I seldom can impose my opinions on others; but I'm sure you all agree that I (and no one else) cannot impose death on others neither.

Harry Vassallo will always try to obtain any publicity at all in an effort to prop up his moribund party.
If I were in his position I would take care of other priorities first.

Gift of Life should realise that Malta is a European democracy and people have a right to voice their opinion. Gift of Life has repeatedly regaled the Maltese citizens with its own opinion countless times, it is now time to appreciate that GoL's opinion is not necessarily that of everybody, or even of the majority. Gift of Life, we have listened to you, we have heard you; now please shut up!

We should also make sure that this abortion issue never ends up in the constitution, as that would surely set a very dangerous precedent of imposing the OPINION of a small group of people on the whole of Maltese society. There has never been any survey, referendum or whatever that proves overwhelming support for an anti-abortion law in the constitution.
These issues such as abortion, euthanasia and divorce, whether pro or anti, have no place in a document which defines the very essence of our country and of its people. We already have a non-secular constitution where our religion is defined.. this is already wrong, but granted that we are a Catholic nation and our culture is shaped by Catholicism. But it should stop there and we need to recognize the times we are living in now.
So please, Gift of Life, give us a break and stop pestering our politicians to amend the constitution for your own agenda. We already have strict (too strict) anti-abortion laws, isn't that enough? Couple that with the fact that is no serious pro-choice movement in this country.
We are discriminating against the women of our country if we do not allow them to at the very least to travel to other EU countries and undergo an abortion.

All EU citizens are free to avail themselves of any services legally offered in any member state. It is against the law to prevent a citizen from accessing legally offered services. Therefore since EU accession any Maltese woman has had the right to travel to any other member state where abortion is legal and have the procedure carried out. That is the law.
