Malta welcomes first EasyJet flight

Low-cost airline EasyJet operated its first flight to Malta this morning.

The Luton-based airline will be flying 10 times per week from Gatwick to Malta and daily from Manchester during the summer. During the shoulder months, it will service Gatwick daily and Manchester airport four times a week. The first flight arrived from Gatwick at 11.30.

Though it is a budget airline, no subsidies are being provided to EasyJet since it has assumed the slots previously operated by GB Airways, the British Airways franchise which it bought in October.

British Airways itself is also starting services between Gatwick and Malta. The increased flights mean a 10 per cent increase in seat capacity on the all-important UK route, although arrivals from the UK dipped in the first two months of this year.

EasyJet is one of the largest low-fare airlines in Europe, operating services on 387 routes between 104 European and North African airports.

Other low-cost airlines which are starting services to Malta include Spain's Vueling flying Madrid to Malta three times a week; Italian airline Volare four times weekly; and airline Norwegian.no between Malta to Oslo three times a week.

Upon arrival this morning the EasyJet aircraft was "saluted" by two fire engines who turned on their hoses to form an arch for the aircraft to taxi through. Passengers were given Maltese wine and flowers were presented to the crew.

Such a great welcome for this LOW COST airline .
Just imagine what the welcome will be when a NO COST airline comes over - Just a joke!! - Come on guys lets be positive - Anything coming our way which can bring us prosperity should be welcomed with a positive attitude.
A good 'Plane wash' in the picture got out the true colour.

What is it with us maltese that we have to think of foreigners as our saviours who come here only for profit, greeting the aircraft with a salute and giving passengers gifts. Our own airline has been a contributor to the needs of the maltese and the country -profits apart- for more than 3 decades, and what do we hear in the media?

Self Catering Apartment owners spend money! cant we just concentrate on the positives for a change , why moan about everything?

I am all for low-cost and the benefits they bring to the country. I was merely commenting on the picture and you know I am right. I stand by what I say.

Have all the grumblers tried buying themselves a cheap ticket?
Cedric Busuttil (on 31/3/08)
Mr Hurdle, in my opinion, who will benefit from these flights are the self catering apartment owners and maybe!! a lucky 2 star pensioner owner!!

A.Mangion couldn't you think of anything good to say! Easyjet taking over this route will help the whole of the Maltese Islands, bringing more visitors and prosperity

Easyjet should at least have had the decency to send their fist aircraft with a proper livery not just a white whale!!
