The Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce is organising a beginners' course in wood carving. The aim and objectives of the course are to enable students to embark on their own woodcarving projects with a helping hand from a tutor. Tuition will be given in low relief and simple carving in the round. It will also include learning how to recognise various timbers and their selection and carving properties as well as looking at the different types of tools required.
The Course will be held between April and June, every Saturday morning and will run for 10 sessions at a cost of €20.96. Tools are to be provided by the students, while wood can either be brought the students or provided by the society at an extra cost.
The society is also organising a gilding course at two levels - beginner and intermediate. The first will teach the basics of the art of gilding while the second will go into more detail regarding various types of gilding.
The course will be held in the evenings and will run over 10 two-hour lessons, once a week. The courses will start in April.
A course, in conjunction with the Għaqda Ħbieb tal-Presepju, will be held on Christmas crib building. The course will be conducted by Charles Bellia. Participants will learn about the crib in Malta, how to build such cribs, accessories such as buildings, lights, trees, etc and also how to make pasturi.
Another course is 'Making model buildings and landscapes for dioramas and architectural models. The course will concentrate on building top grade models from readily accessible, cheap, and recycled materials using basic tools.
No prior experience in the field is necessary and the course is hands-on, aimed at imparting the necessary skills and information to the absolute novice. The instructor will be model maker Alex Vella.
