After its third defeat in a row, the Labour Party should delve deep into its soul to try to find the real reasons why it has lost every general election since 1998. Then it has to take the necessary steps to raise the number of those eligible to vote for the new party leader by including all its paid-up members, say up to 2006, to eliminate any possibility of abuse.
Only then could we say that we have begun to think in an enlightened way that could lead this great party to govern the country in five years' time. This is not to show any lack of confidence in the party delegates; on the contrary, it is because all registered members (except those who joined most recently, and only as a precaution against abuse) are duty bound to shoulder part of the responsibility of electing a new leader. I hope that this suggestion is taken up and implemented without further delay for the benefit of the Labour Party.
