Excavation works are underway to extend the Xagħra cemetery. The cemetery is situated in the area known as Tas-Sellum, bordering the village and facing Victoria. It forms part of a complex of tombs where, among others, the victims of the 1814 plague and the 1837 cholera epidemic were buried.

The extension of the cemetery will reclaim land towards Ta' Żejta valley and will see the addition of over 388 new graves.

Xagħra residents were forced to acquire graves in other cemeteries because no more graves were available at the local cemetery.

The existing cemetery will also be rehabilitated.
