Hair today, gone tomorrow

It sometimes feels like we spend half our lives shaving and plucking, for fear of looking 'hairy'. But there are much easier ways to get rid of unwanted hair and you'll enjoy the benefits for longer.

Unwanted hair growth is a problem for both men and women. Everyone is looking for a long-term solution for embarrassing and unwanted hair. Until now, unwanted hair growth has always been a constant battle of shaving, plucking wax or messy creams.

Now the long-term solution for the removal of unwanted hair is here with this new, safe and effective intense pulsed light treatment.

Lasers emit specific energy through a single beam application and have been used for medical procedures since the 1960s. Intense pulsed light is a broadband application that is pulsed energy that again is selectively absorbed by the target, but enables larger areas to be treated with each discharge. It has been proven to target the varying depths of the hair follicle enabling successful treatment of excessive hair growth. The hair follicle is thermally heated between 65-70° prohibiting re-growth. This process has to take place when the hair is in the Anagen growth stage, which is the active growing phase of the hair, for the treatment to be successful.

With the IPL treatment light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. This absorption raises the temperature of the hair follicle and thermally destroys the cells responsible for re-growth.

Therefore it is important that the patient books a consultation where the treatment will be fully explained prior to the decision to proceed. During the consultation you will have been advised of the procedures of the proposed treatment and will have discussed the area to be treated. A test patch is required prior to commencement of proposed treatments.

Patients are asked to avoid the sun for three to four days before and after treatment. Bleaching, plucking or waxing hair should be avoided for four weeks prior to treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

Hair grows in cycles. The number of treatments required depends upon the skin, hair colouring and coarseness. Everyone will require at least two to three treatments as the process is only effective on hairs during the growing cycle. Repeat sessions will be needed to treat the follicles if they re-enter the growth phase

How IPL treatment works compared to laser

Laser is a high-energy beam of visible light that can be directed on to certain areas or tissues within the skin. These beams of light are omitted in one wavelength or colour at a time and can also vary in terms of strength.

Intense pulsed light is a broadband application enabling larger areas to be treated with each discharge. The filters absorb any unwanted wavelengths and are cut off at the desired colour ensuring that the correct energy is used for the appropriate treatment.

The service is being provided by Alternative Therapy and Beauty Ltd in Naxxar. The beauty side is managed by Jayne Zammit, a licensed aesthetician and beauty therapist who specialises in the use of the most state of the art beauty equipment available in Malta to date. Ms Zammit is responsible for the success of the St Tropez spray tanning revolution in Malta which is the safest way to become tanned without the harmful effects of the sun.

As with any work of art the artist has to start with a fresh canvas. In the case of Alternative Therapy and Beauty Ltd, Ms Zammit starts off with making sure that a client's skin is in the best condition possible.

That is why she has expanded into providing her clients with the benefits of IPL therapy which is the safest way to address non laser hair removal, pigmentation, skin rejuvenation, photo therapy, thread veins, enlarged pores acne and stretch marks. When IPL is used in conjunction with micro-dermabrasion the results on the skin are truly remarkable and long lasting.

The centre in Naxxar aims to incorporate all in one location, primary health care along with the most advanced state of the art beauty treatments. This allows the client to benefit from the full range of service of both treatments

With the recent addition of Low Level Laser (Cold Laser) Alternative Therapy & Beauty Ltd has widened its scope of practice to include pain management of acute and chronic joint pain, arthritis pain, headaches and migraines along with work injuries and sports injuries, offered by resident chiropractor Stephen P. Zammit.

Low Level Laser treatment results in decreasing the healing time of damaged tissue, strengthening damaged tissue in order to avoid re-injury while stimulating the immune system and more importantly relief from pain with none of the side effects associated with the use of pharmaceutical medicines.
