COLCLOUGH. On March 26, JAMES WILLIAM, aged 86, widower of Molly Cynthia, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss, his only son Ian James and his wife Anna, his grandchildren Liam and Kyra, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

COSTA. On March 26, at Mater Dei Hospital, CARMEL, aged 77, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Giovanna, his children Andre and his wife Patricia and their son Conrad and his wife Audrey and their daughter Ilona, Joseph and his wife Rita and their children Michael and his fiancée Antonella, Gilbert and his fiancée Christine, Angela and her husband Noel and their son Kurt, his sisters Rita, Jessie, Lora, Agnes, Mary and Maryanne, his brothers Joe, Anthony, Francis and Andrew, his sisters in-law Paula, Adreana, Rita, Madalena and his brother in-law Charles, other in-laws, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 2.30 p.m. for St Andrew parish church, Luqa, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 3 p.m. followed by interment in the family grave at the parish cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be appreciated.

GALEA. On March 27, AGNES (Ines) née Bonnici, aged 86, widow of Major Joe Galea, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of the Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her irreparable loss her son Ronald and his wife Maria, Hilda and her husband Frank Pullicino, Joe and his wife Carmen, Albert and his wife Josephine and Mark, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brother Frank, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will take place tomorrow at 8.30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish church, Balluta followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetry. Special thanks go to the Administration and Staff of Casa Leone XIII St Julians. Donations to St Clare's Monastery in St Julians will be appreciated.

PORTELLI. On March 27, MYRIAM née Vassallo, aged 84, widow of Joseph passed away peacefully at her residence in Balluta comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her son John and his wife Jo-Anna, her daughter Celine and her husband Graham Warrington, her grandchildren Jeremy and Jacki, her sisters-in-law Antoinette widow of Wilfred Vassallo, and Consie Catt of UK, other relatives and friends. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Giovanna, his children Carmelo and his wife Alfrida, Vivienne and her husband Philip Moran, and Monica, grandchildren Helga, Kevin, Gordon and Marie Cheryl, great-grandchildren Martina and Luke, his sisters Maria and Giovanna residing in Australia, his in-laws and their respective families, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.

Shipyards song contest

The Malta Shipyards Sports and Social Club is organising the 19th edition of the Malta Shipyards Singers' Contest, a festival for Maltese singers in aid of Ir-Razzett tal-Ħbiberija (Park of Friendship) in Marsascala.

The contest will be held over two evenings, the first on June 6 and the final on July 12.

Singers taking part may sing works by Maltese authors and composers. These songs need not be new, however these would not have been used during the 18th edition (2007). There will be five age categories.

Application forms and rules of the contest can be obtained from Nicholas Balzan, Club Secretary, Malta Shipyards, Cospicua (tel: 2399 2069), and from msssc@maltashipyards.com.

The closing date for applications is April 11.

The club is also launching its official website www.maltashipyardssocial.com.

Song festival

Preparations are underway for the 17th edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2008 to be held in September at the Floriana Granaries. Submissions of the songs will be taking place in mid-May.

A new category will be introduced for new local singers aged 15 and over who never took part in a festival organised on a national level.

Regulations will soon be available online through www.maltarightnow.com and www.ukam.info.

Art exhibition extended

The art exhibition with works by the late Norwegian artist Olaug Vethal (1946-2007) at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta has been extended until April 14 due to popular demand.

More artworks will be added to the exhibition collection entitled Grazzi Malta.

An art competition has also been held in conjunction with the exhibition for all young art enthusiasts aged between five and 16 years.

Old 'shipmates' reunion

The new unit management committee of the Sea Cadet Corps is inviting ex-sea cadets and marine cadets for the forthcoming reunion that will be announced in the coming weeks.

The purpose of the reunion is for old "shipmates" to meet once. It is envisaged that from this first reunion, the Ex-Sea Cadets Association would be formed.

Any ex-cadet wishing to attend the reunion is invited to call the committee liaison officer for the ECA, Thomas Agius on 9982 3255 or e-mail the unit secretary, Hurston Gauci Davidson, at Hurston_83@hotmail.com.

The Malta Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps was formed in 1961.

Lectures on Eastertide Liturgy

Fr George Dalli will be delivering six lectures, in Maltese, connected with the liturgy of Eastertide, the present period in which celebrations are held to mark the Mysteries of the Resurrection, the Ascension and the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Holy Church.

The lectures, being organised by the St Francis Prayer Group, Ħamrun, will be held every Tuesday at St. Francis Centre, situated behind St Francis Church in Villambrosa Street, Ħamrun. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Lecture on sculptor Mariano Girada

Heritage Malta's senior curator for arts and palaces, Sandro Debono, will be delivering a public lecture on sculptor Mariano Girada and the artistic links between Malta and Valencia, Spain. The lecture will be held on Tuesday at Heritage Malta's head office in Merchants Street, Valletta at 6.30 p.m. Admission is free of charge and the lecture will be delivered in English.

Disruption of telephone service

Go customers in parts of Xemxija, Għajn Tuffieħa and Manikata will today have their telephone service disrupted due to cable network maintenance, the company said.
