Man accused of breaking police sergeant's hand

Jesmond Portelli, 23, of Zabbar was today granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000 after he pleaded not guilty to having injured Police Sergeant Michael Buttigieg and having assaulted, insulted and resisted other policemen at Zabbar police station last Wednesday.

Prosecuting officer Jesmond Borg told the court that Mr Portelli was being investigated in connection with a hold-up when he became aggressive.

When he was arrested and was about to be taken into a cell, an incident broke out and Sergeant Buttigieg suffered a broken hand.

Roberto Montalto was defence counsel.

To S. Schembri

You dont know what it is like to have a person in your family who serves the country.

It is true that this is not a job but a vocation. The disrespect is coming from higher authorities. My concern is that people who get injured during their service do not even get compensated for protecting you and me.

These are concerns that no one here has mentioned.

It is innocent till proven guilty. But what good is done if this person is left out on a personal guarantee?

Don't you think that persons who do such acts, not forgetting other criminal acts that the person might have committed, needs time to reform in the correctional facility, or should we let persons who commit crimes out on the streets and let them vendict themselves on persons who practice what the law dictates?

Are we still calling it prison or have we really and trly changed the name to Corradino Correctional Facility?

This is a democracy and we should always live like we are in one.

yes, what about giving them some coffee, biscuits and a playstation?

There's no excuse for violent behavior, innocent or not!!
S Schembri (on 28/3/08)
to Rainer Buttigieg, When entering the corps be it police or army, there is always a risk of "something tragic " occurring , we cannot expect that when a person is confronted that person shouldn't react especially if the person would have been put in a cell and locked up, innocent until proven guilty ? Or is it guilty until proven innocent,

Do you even know why its against our constitution?

I know why it is, I just don't agree with it when it comes to peace keeping, because its contradictory to a nation that actively seeks peace, but does nothing about it.

In any case I don't know what your problem with disobeying the constitution is.

First and foremost as an ex-policeman myself who served for 12 years of my life, VF's message shows that he does not have any respect neither to police officers or to any soldier. I served my country with honour and I was ready to give my life if the situation required that. But, to say that as police officers we are there to let others injure us is a mistaken belief. I personally challenge him or her to go and face the families of two of my colleagues who lost their life while on duty in order to protect others. Yes please go and tell them that they died in vain for people like him and they were paid to die otherwise leave the force. We (speaking on behalf of my colleagues) still give our utmost to protect and serve people like you.

As for PS M. Buttigieg whom I have known personally in active duty, would like to commend him for his role in fighting crime in Zabbar. He is a zealous person in his work and people and we should be proud to have people like him within the force.

It is very convenient for those who speak who do not know anything about the force and are ready to give judgement...and btw can Mr crocker do not mix politics on these issue as neither you can understand the situation.
Malcolm Seychell (on 27/3/08)
Till the day we will have politicians who act more like priests rather then decision makers, these things will continue to increase.

Prison sentences should apply in such situations. A policeman should not abuse his position but now we went to the other exterme were criminals can do whatever they like

Just find out what is happening in the UK and you will only cry of what's left of this country which had an empire just a few decades ago.

Criminals should pay and not victims

to graham cocker...

"Mr Farrugia, contrary to what you imagined in your head, People do not join the Army or Police force, to go out and get their hands broken , they join to serve and protect Malta. (gosh Really?)"

WELL because, oh my gosh, before they enter the army or decide to become a policeman, they read the constitution and know the constitution and therefore see that entering the pfp is AGAINST our constitution, however even building clubs and hotels on nature 2000 zones is illegal but OH MY GOSH, i live in malta and yes together everything is possible... GOSH
Maria Gauci (on 27/3/08)
Whilst I agree that policemen and soldiers are not there for the "operetta", such occurrences should never be justified. Also, considering the pittance our policemen are paid, I often wonder how there always seem to be new recruits!!!
Graham Crocker (on 27/3/08)
@V Farrugia.
This is why you are not a Policeman or a soldier, you have no sense of duty or social-awareness. (imbasta socjalist)

Not only that you try tring to use this as an excuse to tell the world that PFP is a bad thing, because Mr Zero ordered you to think so.

Mr Farrugia, contrary to what you imagined in your head, People do not join the Army or Police force, to go out and get their hands broken , they join to serve and protect Malta. (gosh Really?)

Why don't you resign from making a fool of yourselves every once in a while . Gah!

Lawrence Saliba (on 27/3/08)
There is no doubt the V Farrugia is not a police officer. "The police are obliged to do their job but they are not getting paid to get injured". What would have happened if the person arrested broke his hand? Then all hell would have got lose and the police officer would probably get suspended from duties. There are no two weights two measures in these type of cases. The person accused should have had his bail turned down
What V Farrugia forgot to mention is that he as a citizen should have first shown solidarity with the police sergeant and his family for getting injured in order to protect him from criminality. Yet it seems that this V Farrugia is more inclined towards criminals than those who promote good order and peace. It's a pity to hear such remarks.
V Farrugia (on 27/3/08)
Off course the Commissioner is always kept informed about such happenings which alas are almost a daily occurance. What can anyone do when the moral fibre of our citizens has gone berserk! That is why they are in the Police Corps and this kind of thing happens sometime. If they do not want to get injured they should leave the corps immediately. Like our soldiers .. if they do not want to go to pfp, they should resign and leave the army. They are not there for the operetta.
Rainer Buttigieg (on 27/3/08)

Does the state take care of our policemen?
Is the Police Commissioner in touch of what is happening out there?

Families with policemen in their households suffer. They suffer from thinking that one day will come when something tragic will occur.
