Tourism career awareness
The Ministry for Tourism and Culture, together with the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and a number of key stakeholders in both the educational and tourism sectors, is developing an educational campaign to raise awareness on the importance of the tourism industry, while encouraging and investing in future careers.
Over recent years, the MTA has embarked on various projects and activities to boost general tourism awareness and provide information about careers and job opportunities in hospitality, travel and tourism. It recently launched an educational music DVD featuring Ira Losco, who follows a tourist during his seven-day stay in Malta, identifying the many careers in the tourism industry.
"Tourism is one of the main pillars of the Maltese economy, which is why the MTA is stepping up its efforts, together with the Institute of Tourism Studies, the Employment and Training Corporation, the university and tourism stakeholders to increase teachers, parents and schoolchildren's understanding of the importance of tourism and the career opportunities that the industry has to offer," said Joseph Tanti, head of human resources development.
The DVD is one of a number of new tools developed as part of the CHOICE programme. Over the past few years, the CHOICE programme - which strives to heighten tourism awareness and promote careers in the tourism industry among secondary school students - has reached over 10,000 students in the third, fourth and fifth form from 27 private, public and church schools.
The MTA, in collaboration with the Education Division, has also organised the Tourism In-service Programme For Teachers.
