Malta beat Liechtenstein 7-1

Malta beat Liechtenstein 7-1 in a football friendly this evening, with Michael Mifsud scoring five of the goals.

The match, played before a crowd of some 1,000 at Ta'Qali, saw the Coventry player open the score within two minutes from the penalty spot. He scored again in the 17th and the 21st minutes, the hat trick also coming from the penalty spot. Jamie Pace made it four for Malta before the break.

By this time Liechtenstein were reduced to 10 men with the sending off of D'Elia in the 19th minute when he downed Ettienne Barbara who was going for goal.

Burgmeir drew one back for the visitors six minutes into the second half after Liechtenstein missed a penalty.

Mifsud then scored another two goals in the 59th and 69th minutes and Brain Said completed the unusual football feast for Malta four minutes before the end.

Despite finishing bottom of Group F in the European qualifiers, Liechtenstein enjoyed home victories over Iceland (3-0), Latvia (1-0) and an away draw against Iceland (1-1).

I was there, I saw it all and we just couldn't believe what was happening.

It is a pity that local support is so low in this country. Where are the Maltese supporters?

Well done !! Altough Liechtenstein ara also a modest team they are ahead in the FIFA rankings.
Apart from that we all remember our national team losing against Faroe Islands. So there is improvement. 7-1 is no joke.

Just wanted to say Well Done and Forza Malta! Those of us who grumble when things go wrong should learn to say PROSIT when things go well.

Well done Malta!!!

Michael Mifsud is a key player for the Maltese national team. More Maltese players should follow his footsteps.

This result shows that Maltese football can achieve a lot. Well done Malta!!!!
