Election of new PN general secretary

Ex-Net TV head of news possible candidate

The Nationalist Party's administrative general council which will elect the party's executive including a new general secretary, is likely to meet either in June or July.

General secretary Joe Saliba, who yesterday confirmed he will be calling it a day, said the party usually held this council meeting in April but, because of the election and since this had to be preceded by another general council on the election itself, the session would probably be held in June or July.

The post Mr Saliba is vacating is likely to be contested by the owner of Watermelon Media and Communications Ltd and former Net Television head of news Pierre Portelli.

He said, when contacted yesterday, he was thinking about the possibility of running for the post after he was approached by several people within the party, including MPs, over the past two weeks.

"Several people, including MPs, have asked me to take this step. However, I think it is still too early to pronounce myself about it or to make a decision"

Mr Portelli was deeply involved in the PN's referendum and electoral campaigns in 2003 but has not been in the limelight since resigning from head of news in 2004. He was known to be critical of the party and the people who approached him mentioned this as a desirable quality for general secretary. "This is very encouraging. It shows that the people within the PN want the party to keep renewing itself," he said.

Another possible candidate is Beppe Fenech Adami, son of former PN leader and current President of the Republic, Eddie Fenech Adami. In spite of several attempts, he could not be contacted yesterday.

Other names being mentioned included those of the party's information director, Gordon Pisani, and that of the President of the party's general council, Victor Scerri. Both said they were not interested in the post.

Mr Pisani categorically denied he was interested, adding he would not be submitting his nomination.

"Although a lot has been written about my interest, no one has ever spoken to me... It is not true I am interested. At least not at the moment but I remain available to the party... Contesting the post of general secretary is something I have not even thought about," Dr Scerri said.

Before the June/July council meetings are held, it is likely that the party's new headquarters will be inaugurated. Mr Saliba has gone on record saying he would like to still be general secretary when the Prime Minister inaugurates the PN's new headquarters.

"I will work for the new headquarters to be inaugurated before then. No date has yet been set but the work is ready and it is very likely it will be opened by then... I worked on that project and would like to open it but this is just my wish," he said.

Joe Galea - You said "For me I don't give a damn to whom PN choses as Gen. sec. So should PN supporters be when it comes to Labour choosing their leader."

I beg to differ. You see, apart from the fact that having a viable opposition makes for a stronger and better government, an MLP leader is not there simply to be leader of the party, but is there with a view to one day being prime minister.

And that, Joe Galea, affects the whole of Malta, and not just the labourites. Get my drift?

Victor Laiviera - You seem to make a habit of turning yourself into the coconut shy on every blog. You must enjoy it, otherwise you would simply stick to a blog on l-Orizzont or similar if there is one...

Why not Eileen Montesin?

Joe,you gave this Party so much.A big thanks for that.
Should It be Pierre ,Victor , Beppe or Gordon.... the next General Secretary of the P.N. , I have no doubt they would lead the Party to further electoral Victories.
The P.N. is spoilt for choice whenever it comes to choose the right people to fill a post within the Party.

My dear Mr. Martinelli, this is truly a case that quality is solely in the eyes of the beholder,,,!

David Farrugia & Martin Borg: Your comments both confirm that you both have the same mentality as Labour's old guard. I stand by my assessment that the party you both support is doomed to be the Party Of The Opposition for eternity! Maybe in additon to changing your leader, you should also change your party's name to the one I just listed! Now move along and go find yourselves another party LOSER to lead the MLP for many more years from the opposition benches. U biex tkunu tafu, jien Malti wkoll. Bill Millam, how come you are such an expert in maltese politics? you should be more concerned with US politics and with your dumb conflict-loving president.

J Martinelli why are you so in love with Gorg Abela? If Gorg Abela would be Labour's next leader, would you turn to a labourite?

I would like to remind you that Labour are choosing the new leader with open doors, no-one blocked anyone from contesting. Your problem is that you want a person who suits you to be MLP leader so that your GonziPn will be rest assured to keep stuck to power. Thanks for your useless suggestions, but keep them to your party.
David Gatt (on 28/3/08)
Hmmm, isnt it strange for Joe Saliba to leave immediately after winning an election? I mean, he's not that old. Why is he leaving in such a hurry?

I am a Labour supporter and you PN die-hards wont stop me from talking. It's you that taught us to interfere into other parties' matters and so here we are doing what you do best.

In my opinion the best candidates for PN general secretary would be Daphne Caruana Galizia. I'm pretty sure that with her charm and her unbiased judgments she would unite PN and MLP once and for all.
David Farrugia (on 27/3/08)
Bill Millam, when our forefathers were discussing politics, your country was still inhabited by naked natives.
martin Borg (on 27/3/08)
I think that Bill Millam still thinks that we don't have the brains to offer in Maltese politics. Little does Bill know the Maltese politics is older then his country.
Albert Gauci Cunningham (on 27/3/08)
I agree with the Labour supporters here.......while I find Mr.Laiviera's comments on other blogs sad at best and downright ridiculous at worst I think that he has every right to say who he thinks should be the PN's secretary General..........as long as they keep Jason to themselves I and thousands of nationalists and floaters alike are happy! I think the PN needs a media person.....someone closer to the Media who understands how to give the Party's message better........the PN seems to be good at this only during the election campaigns.........
raymond Calleja (on 27/3/08)
Why not lou Bondi or Joe Azzopardi?
Joe Martinelli (on 27/3/08)
The NP has the luxury of choosing from a number of quality candidates for the post of General Secretary.
The MLP are still struggling trying to find the suitable candidates for their new leader.
While the NP uses an 'open door' policy, the MLP is still bolting their doors to George Abela and others who are or were not in Dr. Sant's pocket.
Joe Galea (on 27/3/08)
A. camilleri, why don't you and all PN supporters stick to your colours too. It's so funny to hear you say that, when there are articles regarding labour then all PN know-it-all post infinite number of posts to suggest and comment and bla bla bla. I can't believe to what level of hypocrisy we ended up in, in this country.
For me I don't give a damn to whom PN choses as Gen. sec. So should PN supporters be when it comes to Labour choosing their leader.
Daniel Micallef (on 27/3/08)
are these the same guys that urge statutory changes whereby all party members vote for the new Labour leader? give us a break.
David Zammit (on 27/3/08)
Interesting to see how the PN hard-liner posters just love to dictate who and who should not be labour leader but the subject of the next PN sec. gen. is for PN supporters and PN supporters ONLY.
With all due respect the argument brought by PN hard-liners that they want a viable opposition is laughable....and nobody believes it anyway (unless he was born yesterday)

All they want is for the PN to be in government in eternum fullstop. All other arguments are humbug and lies.

Incidentally I was watching Mr Portelli on his programme on NET. Being a prospective sec. gen. for PN, he really has the MLP at heart poor soul. he even took to challenging Godfrey Grima into admitting that Abela was the best choice for MLP leader so that we could have a viable alternative in 5 yrs time.
He's so generous isn't he - he would actually be willing to lose his first election as PN sec. gen. just so we can have a viable alternative.

What a joke - not as funny as when JPO said he didn't know his land was going to be used to build a discotheque however! that was surely the joke of the year.
R. Gauci (on 27/3/08)
You Nationalists speak up as if you won a landslide election with a 30,000 vote difference. Because MLP lost the election does not mean that a Labourite cannot give his views on this issue, you put your noses all the time in the Labour Party's issues. Where is the freedom of speech? Don't take us back 30 years with your arrogance please!
Chris Xuereb (on 27/3/08)
Mr Laviera makes the most risible remarks. I am certainly no supporter of the Nationalist Party for whom I feel a certain antipathy but the Labour Party are really quite beyond the pale. Howsoever Mr Laviera may attempt to depict it the facts are what they are. Labour has proven itself to be singularly incompetent and has paid the price by being rejected by the electorate in 6 of the last 7 elections. The truth is that they were outclassed by the Nationalists on all fronts. So Mr Laviera, make as many snide remarks as will suffice to vent your frustration. It must be teeth gnashingly infuriating to watch your party's collective bungling throw away yet another election and consign itself to a further five years in opposition.
Victoria Grech (on 27/3/08)
Mr Paul Fenech... Mr Laiviera needs some comic diversion after the triple whammy of the MLP defeats
paul fenech (on 26/3/08)
Dear mr Laviera i think that your party has enough problems to pick up the bits and pieces after the result of the general election, so why bother about the post of general secretary of the nationalist party. Kindly take my advice and help your party to find an electable leader, perhaps within the next five years the MLP wil once again go up the steps of auberge de castille
Bill Millam (on 26/3/08)
If history is any indication, the PN will chose another WINNER capable of leading the party to yet another victory in 5 years time while the MLP will chose yet another LOSER to take the party on another stint in the opposition chairs for yet another 5 years!

David Buttigieg (on 26/3/08)
The reason that PN are interested in the new Labour leader is that we yearn for a viable opposition. The only remotely viable opposition we had since 1987 was that blip between 96 & 98. PN on the other hand has won the majority since 1981 - it does not need suggestions from the losing team.
Philip Borg (on 26/3/08)
Mr Laiviera, I’m afraid you have limited your suggestion to only two of the media strategic gurus who might be serving the gonzipn so well.
Knowing how eager gonzipn have recently been to suggest who’s best for Labour, why don’t they themselves rope in someone they respect and love so much?
Certainly, no one would mind it if “charity begins at home”. It fits so well within the gonzipn “friends of friends” trend. After all, “ahna lkoll ahwa Maltin”!
Peter Cremona (on 26/3/08)
Mr Laiviera, surely you must be more concerned who will be the next MLP leader.
A. Camilleri (on 26/3/08)
Victor Laiviera, stick to your colours, please, and leave the PN issue to PN supporters.
Victor Laiviera (on 26/3/08)
May I suggest Fr Joe Borg or, perhaps, Fr Peter Serracino-Inglott?

I'm sure they would make excellent candidates.
John Camilleri (on 26/3/08)
Pierre Portelli cannot contest the election for PN Secretary General as he is not a member of the Party National Executive.
